Interlock vs. Stamped Concrete: Which Driveway Is Right for Your Home?

By A-Z Landscaping Team

Both look great on day one. Here's how interlocking pavers and stamped concrete really compare on durability, repairs, cost and curb appeal in the GTA.

Your driveway is the first thing guests see and one of the largest hardscape surfaces on your property, so the choice between interlocking pavers and stamped concrete matters — both for looks and for how the surface holds up over a decade of GTA winters. Both can look beautiful the day they're finished. The real differences show up over time.

Durability and our climate

The single biggest factor in Ontario is freeze-thaw. Water gets into every surface, freezes, expands and pushes things apart. Stamped concrete is a single rigid slab; when the ground moves — and it will — the slab can crack, and once it cracks there is no invisible fix. Interlocking pavers are individual units set on a flexible compacted base. They move with the ground instead of fighting it, which is why a properly built interlock driveway can last 30+ years looking sharp.

Repairs and stains

This is where interlock really pulls ahead. If a paver is ever stained by oil or damaged, we lift that single unit and replace it — the repair is invisible. With stamped concrete, a crack or stain usually means living with it or resurfacing a large area, and colour-matching new concrete to weathered concrete is notoriously difficult.

Cost

Stamped concrete is often a little cheaper up front — typically 10–20% less than comparable interlock. But factor in the lifetime: concrete may need resealing, crack repair and eventual replacement sooner, while interlock is repairable unit by unit. Many homeowners find interlock is the better value over the years, even if the first invoice is higher.

Appearance and resale

Both offer a huge range of looks. Stamped concrete can mimic stone or brick with seamless patterns. Interlock gives you genuine dimension, crisp borders, soldier courses and the ability to mix colours and formats — the detailing that reads as “custom” in established neighbourhoods. In our experience across the GTA's premium areas, interlock tends to carry stronger curb-appeal and resale value.

What they have in common

Here's the part most homeowners overlook: neither surface is better than its base. Whether you choose pavers or concrete, the excavation depth, aggregate base, compaction and drainage determine whether it lasts or fails. We have replaced plenty of both that failed for the same reason — a base built too thin to save a few dollars.

  • Choose interlock if you want maximum longevity, invisible repairs, and the highest-end look.
  • Choose stamped concrete if you want a seamless single-surface look at a slightly lower up-front cost and accept that repairs are harder.

Our recommendation

For most GTA driveways — especially given our winters and the value of curb appeal — we generally recommend interlocking pavers on a properly engineered base. But the right answer depends on your home, budget and taste, and we're happy to show you both in a 3D design.
