Overview
A paver driveway is the highest-impact upgrade to your home's curb appeal — and a structural project that must be done right. We build a load-rated base that handles vehicles year-round without rutting, cracking or settling, then finish it with the borders and patterns that frame an estate.
Typical investment
$15,000 – $80,000+
Every project is unique. We provide a fixed, itemized quote after a free on-site consultation.

Why It Matters
Interlock Driveway Contractor in Toronto and the GTA: Building a Driveway Engineered for Vehicle Loads and Freeze-Thaw

A driveway is the most heavily loaded surface on a residential property and the first thing anyone sees, which makes it the worst possible place to economise. It carries two or three vehicles daily, occasional delivery trucks, and in winter a plough blade and the concentrated weight of packed snow and ice. A paver driveway built to patio specifications will rut under tire tracks within a couple of seasons, and the pattern of failure is unmistakable, two parallel depressions where the wheels travel, a lifted crown between them, and pavers rocking loose along the garage apron. Building a true interlock driveway in Toronto means designing a flexible pavement, an engineered load-spreading base topped with a wearing course of interlocking units, so that a point load at the surface is distributed across a wide area of subgrade. Done properly it outperforms both asphalt and poured concrete in our climate, because it accommodates the ground's seasonal movement instead of resisting it until it cracks. Done improperly it is the single most expensive lesson a homeowner can buy, and we are called to rebuild those driveways constantly across Vaughan, Richmond Hill and North York.
Vehicular base depth is materially different from pedestrian depth. We excavate to roughly 350 to 450 millimetres of compacted Granular A or Granular B beneath the bedding course, going deeper where subgrade testing shows soft clay or organic fill, which is common on older lots where the original driveway was built on whatever was on hand. The subgrade is proof-rolled and separated with woven geotextile of appropriate tensile strength, and on genuinely poor soils we add a biaxial geogrid to bridge weak zones and stiffen the aggregate layer. Base goes in at 100 millimetre lifts, each compacted with a reversible plate compactor, and we check grade continuously rather than correcting at the end. Bedding is 25 millimetres of high performance clear stone, and the paver itself must be at least 80 millimetres thick, an interlocking shape rather than a plain rectangle where possible, because geometric interlock plus joint friction is what makes the surface behave as one composite mat. Cross-fall of two per cent minimum moves meltwater off the surface, and concrete edge restraint or a haunched curb along open edges prevents lateral creep. Around twenty freeze-thaw cycles a winter, plus road salt, mean the whole assembly must drain freely, because saturated base plus frost equals heave.
For paver driveways we specify heavy-duty product families, Unilock's Il Campo, Town Hall, Camelot and the Series line, and Techo-Bloc's Blu 80, Aberdeen and Industria, all available in 80 millimetre thicknesses with proven load performance. Where a client wants the calm look of large format slabs, we keep slabs to walkways and terraces and use a load-rated unit in the drive lanes, blending them with a shared colour palette so the transition reads as design rather than compromise. Borders matter more on a driveway than anywhere else, a double soldier course in a contrasting charcoal or a Techo-Bloc coping band defines the edge, hides the cut line and stiffens the perimeter. Widening an existing narrow drive to accommodate a second vehicle is one of our most requested jobs, and we usually make the addition a deliberate design element with a contrasting apron or a parking pad in a different pattern rather than trying to disguise it. For heated driveways we install hydronic tubing or electric mats within the base assembly, valuable on the steep grades common in Rosedale, Hoggs Hollow and parts of Vaughan where a sloped driveway becomes genuinely hazardous in February.
Replacing a failing asphalt or concrete driveway starts with understanding why it failed, because the same subgrade will be there when we finish. Our site visit records elevations at the garage threshold, the municipal sidewalk and the road, checks how far the garage floor sits above final grade, identifies where downspouts and sump lines discharge, and confirms lot line and right-of-way constraints, since many Toronto and Vaughan properties have front-yard parking and boulevard rules that need to be respected. We then build a photoreal three dimensional model of your home with the new interlock driveway in place, in your chosen paver and border, so you can judge scale and colour against your brick before committing. Once approved you receive a fixed itemized quote, with asphalt removal and disposal, excavation, geotextile, aggregate, pavers, restraint, jointing, any heating system and final landscaping restoration each priced separately. Our own crews do the work, and one project lead runs your site start to finish. Most residential paver driveways in the GTA take one to two and a half weeks, with vehicle access restored on a schedule we agree in advance.
The problems we get called to fix are highly repetitive. Rutting in wheel paths means the base was too shallow or under-compacted, and there is no surface remedy, the affected area has to be excavated and rebuilt to vehicular depth. Sunken aprons at the garage door are almost always foundation backfill that was never compacted, sometimes combined with water running off the roof directly onto that spot, so we rebuild the base and reroute the downspout or add a trench drain across the threshold. Driveways that pitch toward the garage are grading errors that flood floors every thaw, and correcting them requires re-establishing fall across the full length, occasionally with a linear drain where elevation simply is not available. Spreading edges along a lawn line mean no proper restraint. Cracked concrete driveways with heaved sections and salt scaling are usually beyond patching, and we are honest about that rather than selling a resurfacing that will telegraph the same cracks within two years. Every rebuild starts by fixing drainage, because water is the underlying cause in the large majority of driveway failures across the GTA.
Investment in a paver driveway is driven by area, the volume of asphalt or concrete to be removed and hauled, excavation depth dictated by soil conditions, paver selection, the complexity of borders and cuts, whether steps or retaining elements at the garage or street edge are required, and whether snow melt is included. It costs more than resurfacing asphalt and typically lands near or above poured concrete, and the reason is straightforward, you are paying for a much deeper engineered base and far more hand labour. What you receive in return is a surface with a thirty to forty year realistic lifespan, immunity to the cracking that plagues concrete in our freeze-thaw climate, and the unique ability to be opened and reinstated invisibly if a service line ever needs work. Maintenance is a wash each spring, joint sand replenished periodically, and prompt attention to any settlement, which stays local rather than propagating. Our multi-year workmanship warranty stands behind the base, not just the surface. Front-yard hardscape also carries unusually strong curb-appeal value at resale.
