Sod, Gardens & Planting

Lawn and garden work is the part of landscaping most often sold as a commodity and most often botched. Anyone can roll sod over whatever is there; the difference between a lawn that knits in three weeks and holds through August and one that turns straw-coloured by July is entirely in what happens before the first roll touches the ground. Premium sod installation in Toronto means removing the failed turf and debris rather than burying it, correcting the grade so water leaves the house and does not pond, subsoiling or decompacting hardpan left by construction traffic, and building a real growing medium to depth. Designed garden beds are the same story: a bed is a soil volume and a plant community, not a strip of mulch with three shrubs in it. Our garden design work across the GTA starts from soil, light, drainage and mature plant size, which is why our beds look intentional in year one and better in year five rather than overgrown and crowded.

The substance is underground. Most GTA subdivisions sit on heavy clay with the topsoil stripped and the remainder compacted by machinery, and turf roots simply will not penetrate that. We aim for a minimum of 150 millimetres of quality screened loam under sod, more where the subsoil is dense, blended toward roughly five per cent organic matter and a pH near 6.0 to 7.0, which is where Kentucky bluegrass takes up nutrients most efficiently. We break compaction rather than cover it, then fine grade with a positive slope of at least two per cent away from foundations and toward a designed outlet, because standing water is what kills both turf and shrubs over a GTA winter. Sod is laid on moist soil in staggered courses with tight seams and no stretching, rolled to eliminate air pockets, and watered heavily and immediately, because the thin sod layer dries out in hours. In garden beds we excavate to 400 or 500 millimetres and backfill with an amended mix, and we plant trees at grade with the root flare exposed. Where drainage is genuinely poor we install perforated pipe in clear stone, or raise the bed, rather than pretending amended soil alone will drain clay.

For turf we specify nursery-grown Kentucky bluegrass sod for sun and a fescue-heavy blend for shaded yards under mature maples, which are common through Leaside, Willowdale and older Richmond Hill streets, and we use tall fescue where a client wants better drought tolerance and less watering. Where sun is truly insufficient, the honest answer is shade planting or a stone terrace, not sod that will fail annually. Garden design leans on layered structure: evergreen bones from boxwood, yew and dwarf spruce for winter presence, small ornamental trees such as serviceberry, Japanese maple or tricolour beech as focal points, and hydrangea, ninebark, coneflower, catmint and ornamental grasses for long seasonal interest. For fast privacy we install mature caliper trees and screening rows of Emerald cedar, Techny arborvitae or columnar hornbeam, craned in where access allows. Beds are defined with cut edges, steel, aluminium or stone edging, and topped with 50 to 75 millimetres of shredded bark or pine mulch. Irrigation is designed with matched precipitation zones so lawn and beds are watered separately, plus drip lines in beds and a rain sensor.

You will see the planting before it exists. We survey sun exposure through the day, existing tree canopy and root zones, grades and low spots, downspout discharge points, and soil condition from test holes. Then we model your property and render the design photorealistically, showing beds and plantings at mature size rather than nursery size, so you can judge how much of the neighbour's second storey the screening row will actually block and how the bed lines relate to the patio and driveway. You approve the renderings, then receive a fixed itemized quote naming species, calibre or pot size and counts, along with soil volumes, sod area, mulch and irrigation zones. Our own planting crew executes the work with our masons handling any stone edging or retaining, under one project lead. Sod and garden installations typically run three days to two weeks, and we schedule around the planting windows, favouring spring and early autumn for trees and avoiding sod installs in extreme summer heat where we can.

The calls come in every summer. Sod that browned and died in patches because it was laid on 25 millimetres of skim topsoil over compacted clay and could not root. Lawns with a soft, wet strip along the foundation where grade was left flat or negative. Beds where cedars planted too deep, too close together and in unamended clay have gone thin and brown from the inside out. Shrubs still sitting in their nursery root balls years later because backfill was pure clay and the roots never left the planting hole. Irrigation zones mixing rotors and sprays on one valve so half the lawn is soaked and half is dry. Mulch piled 150 millimetres deep against trunks, creating a rot collar and inviting girdling roots. We fix causes: strip and rebuild the soil profile, correct the grade and give water a route out, replant at the right depth and spacing with real backfill, and reconfigure irrigation into matched zones. Overseeding a lawn that is failing because of compaction and drainage only postpones the same conversation.

Price is driven by area, the depth and volume of imported soil, how much failed material has to be removed and disposed of, the calibre and quantity of trees, and whether irrigation is part of the scope. Soil is invariably the line item people want to trim and the one that determines the outcome, so we would rather reduce plant counts than thin the growing medium. A properly installed lawn on a real soil profile should be permanent with routine mowing at 65 to 75 millimetres, deep and infrequent watering, aeration every year or two and seasonal fertilising. Designed beds need light seasonal pruning and mulch topped up annually.
