How Much Does a Backyard Renovation Cost in the GTA? (2026 Guide)

By A-Z Landscaping Team

Realistic price ranges for backyard transformations across the Greater Toronto Area — and the factors that actually drive the number.

It's the first question almost every homeowner asks us: “What is this going to cost?” It's a fair question — and a tricky one to answer in a single number, because a backyard renovation is less like buying a product and more like building a small addition to your home. The price depends on what you build, the materials you choose, and the conditions of your site. That said, after more than two decades and 860+ completed projects across the Greater Toronto Area, we can give you realistic ranges and, more importantly, explain what actually drives the number.

Typical investment ranges

For a complete backyard transformation in the GTA — one that combines hardscaping, greenery and at least one feature element — most of our projects fall between $50,000 and $250,000+. A focused upgrade such as a new interlock patio with some planting can start around $15,000–$30,000, while a full luxury build with a pool environment, outdoor kitchen and extensive stonework can exceed $500,000.

Here is roughly how that breaks down by element:

  • Interlock patios & walkways: $10,000–$100,000 depending on size and material.
  • Engineered retaining walls: $20,000–$250,000 for larger structural installations.
  • Pool decking & surrounds: $30,000–$150,000+ (separate from the pool itself).
  • Outdoor kitchens & fireplaces: $15,000–$120,000.
  • Sod, gardens & planting: $4,000–$60,000.

What actually drives the price

Two backyards of the same size can differ by tens of thousands of dollars. The biggest factors are:

Materials. Premium porcelain pavers, natural flagstone and large-format slabs cost more than standard concrete pavers — but they last longer and look unmistakably high-end. Site access and grade. A sloped lot, poor drainage, or a yard that machinery can't easily reach all add labour and engineering. Excavation and base. The work you never see — proper excavation, compacted aggregate base and drainage — is where quality is won or lost, and it is a real cost. Permits and engineering. Taller retaining walls, pool enclosures and certain structures require drawings and municipal approvals.

Why the cheapest quote usually costs more

We have been called in to fix more failed “bargain” projects than we can count — patios that heaved after one winter, walls that bulged because they had no drainage, driveways that cracked because the base was too thin. In the GTA's freeze-thaw climate, shortcuts below the surface always surface eventually. A properly built landscape costs more up front and far less over its lifetime.

How to get an accurate number

The only way to know what your project will cost is a site visit. We measure, assess grade and drainage, talk through how you want to live outdoors, and then produce a fixed, itemized proposal — plus a photoreal 3D design so you can see exactly what you are investing in before construction begins. There are no surprise change orders, because we plan the entire project before we pick up a shovel.
