Pool Landscaping Cost in the GTA: Decking, Coping & Surrounds (2026)

Pool quotes surprise people twice. The first surprise is the pool itself. The second - usually a few weeks later, once the shell is priced and the excavator is booked - is everything around it. The decking, the coping, the grading, the fence, the lighting, the privacy planting and the seating areas are almost never included in a pool builder quote, and together they frequently cost as much as the pool. This guide sets out what pool landscaping actually includes in the GTA, what it costs in 2026, and how to sequence it so you are not paying twice for the same square metre of ground.

What pool landscaping actually covers

Your pool contractor typically supplies the shell, the plumbing, the equipment pad, the liner or finish, and a narrow band of concrete around the perimeter. Everything from that band outward is landscape scope. That includes:

• The deck and surround - the walking, lounging and dining surface around the pool
• Coping - the capped edge where the deck meets the water
• Grading and drainage - moving water away from the pool and the house, not toward them
• Retaining and seating walls where the yard is sloped or terraced
• Code-compliant enclosure - fencing, gates and self-latching hardware
• Glass or aluminum railing where the deck is elevated
• Privacy planting and screening
• Cabana, pergola or shade structure
• Outdoor kitchen, bar or fire feature
• Low-voltage lighting for safety and evening use

2026 pool landscaping costs in the GTA

Across Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Oakville, complete pool surrounds in 2026 generally run $30,000 to $150,000 and up. Here is where that money goes.

• Pool deck and surround: $35 to $90 per square foot installed. A modest 600 sq ft surround in quality concrete pavers starts around $28,000; a 1,400 sq ft porcelain or natural stone surround with detailing runs $90,000 to $140,000.
• Coping: $80 to $220 per linear foot. Bullnose concrete coping sits at the low end, thermal-finished granite and full-thickness natural stone at the high end. A typical 16 x 32 pool has roughly 100 linear feet of coping.
• Grading, drainage and excavation: $8,000 to $35,000 depending on how much fill has to move and whether catch basins and pipe runs are needed.

• Pool-code fencing and gates: $80 to $220 per linear foot depending on material. See fences and gates.
• Glass railing: $250 to $450 per linear foot for frameless or spigot-mounted systems on elevated decks.
• Privacy planting: $8,000 to $45,000 for a mature cedar or specimen screen, depending on caliper and how much instant height you want.

Choosing the right surface: porcelain, natural stone or concrete

The deck material is the decision that most affects both cost and how the space actually feels to use barefoot in August.

Porcelain pavers

Now the premium default for GTA pool decks. Porcelain is close to non-porous, so chlorine and salt do not stain it, it resists algae, and lighter tones stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark stone. Look for a rated slip resistance suitable for wet areas. Installation is more exacting - porcelain wants a precise base and specific setting methods - so labour costs more than standard pavers.

Natural stone

Thermal-finished granite, limestone and sandstone give a depth of colour manufactured products cannot match, and full-thickness stone coping is the classic pool edge. The trade-offs: some limestones are porous and stain in a salt-water environment, and dark granite gets genuinely hot in direct sun. Material cost is the highest of the three.

Concrete pavers

Modern lines from Unilock and Techo-Bloc include products developed specifically for pool surrounds, with textured slip-resistant faces and matched coping units. Poured concrete

The cheapest surround, but it cracks with our freeze-thaw cycles and cannot be lifted and relaid if the ground settles. Where budget demands it, we use it away from the water line rather than at the coping. See concrete services.

Grading and drainage: the part nobody photographs

A pool changes how your entire yard drains. You have created a large impermeable surface plus a hard deck around it, and that water has to go somewhere that is not your basement or your neighbour's yard. Proper pool landscaping includes pitching the deck away from the water at a consistent slope, and pitching the yard away from the house. Where the lot slopes toward the house, that means catch basins, drainage pipe and often a retaining wall.

Skipping this is the most expensive mistake in pool landscaping. Settled decks, coping that drops away from the water line, water pooling at the door threshold and hydrostatic pressure behind walls all trace back to drainage that was never engineered. It is also the reason we specify base depth and drainage on the quote itself rather than leaving it as an assumption.

Pool enclosure requirements in Ontario

Every GTA municipality requires a pool enclosure permit and enforces a fence bylaw. The specifics vary by municipality, but the recurring requirements are consistent:

• A minimum enclosure height around the entire pool area
• Gates that are self-closing and self-latching, with the latch mounted on the pool side at a specified height
• Limits on climbable horizontal members and on gaps between vertical members
• The enclosure in place before the pool is filled
• Separate permits for the enclosure and for any deck above a set height

Sequencing: how the pool build and the landscape build fit together

The order matters more than most homeowners expect, because two trades are working in the same hole.

1. Design first. The landscape design should be complete before the pool is dug, so the pool position, the deck elevations and the coping height are all decided together. We produce a photoreal 3D design you approve before anything is built.
2. Excavation and pool shell. The pool contractor works, with the landscape crew coordinating access and spoil placement.
3. Rough grading, drainage, walls and conduit. Electrical, gas and lighting conduit goes in now - trenching a finished deck later is expensive.
4. Base preparation and deck installation. The largest landscape phase.
5. Coping, steps and railing.
6. Fencing, structures, planting, sod and lighting.

A full pool landscape typically runs six to fourteen weeks of landscape time, on top of the pool contractor's schedule. Starting design over the winter for a spring dig is the difference between swimming in July and swimming next year.

Frequently asked questions

Is pool landscaping included in my pool quote?

Almost never beyond a narrow concrete band. Assume the surround, coping, fencing, grading, structures and planting are separate scope, and budget for them at the same time you budget for the pool.

What is a realistic all-in budget?

Can I add the landscaping a year after the pool?

You can, but expect to pay more overall - machine mobilisation happens twice, and any temporary grading or sod placed in year one gets removed in year two. If budget requires it, phase it with the full design in hand so the year-one work is not wasted.

Is salt water hard on pavers and stone?

It is hard on porous materials. Porcelain and dense granite handle it well; softer limestones and some sandstones can spall or stain. We specify material with salt exposure in mind rather than by appearance alone.
